Local: in Flanders, the local economic activity areas are earmarked for SMEs active on the local market. The surface area of the individual parcels cannot exceed 5000 m2. They are subject to local government regulations. In France, they are called “zones d'intérêt communal” (local interest areas).

Mixed Local: in Flanders, this is a local area where various activities are performed, as opposed to a specific area. In France, it is a local interest area that may be mixed or specialised.

Unique company number: in Belgium, the unique company number has been introduced in order to provide a unique identification key for companies, which can be used for the exchange of data between companies and the authorities as well as within the framework of the electronic transfer of data in the new e-government environment. This company number can be compared to the French SIRET code.

Park management: or industrial estate management refers to the continuous maintenance of the quality of the establishment location on an industrial site. The park manager takes care of this management in collaboration with the established companies and the local authorities.

Regional: in Flanders, the regional economic activity areas are earmarked for enterprises that are active on a market of an at least regional scope. The surface area of the individual parcels must be larger than 5000m2. They are subject to regional or provincial regulations. In France, they are called “zones d'intérêt communautaire” (community interest areas) or “pôles structurants” (structuring poles) (national and international influence).

Region: In France, this would be a community interest area.

Mixed regional: in Flanders, this is a regional area where various activities are performed : industrial enterprises, construction companies, transport companies, tertiary sector companies, … as opposed to specific regional areas. In France, they are called “zones d'intérêt communautaire” (community interest areas) or “pôles structurants” (structuring poles) (national and international influence).

Speciality: This is an area where activities are dedicated to a specific field (automobile, packaging …).

SCOT or Schéma de Cohérence Territoriale: plan that establishes the long-term (20 to 30 years) spatial organisation of an area and that is prepared at the scale of a large conurbation or “arrondissement” (district).

Technological centre: they comprise a division dedicated to applied research, possibly (but not necessarily) in cooperation with the universities. The main activity consists in high-tech industrial production and the provision of services to the enterprises. ZAC /Zone d'Aménagement Concerté /Integrated development zone : spatial planning areas in consultation with the municipality involved; the organisation and equipment of a site by a public agency.
